The Sissinghurst wall sconce is inspired by the grandeur and cool restraint of Neo classical design, which Martin has subverted by drawing on the radical spirit of the Bloomsbury Group, famed for their celebration of the decorative and the handmade.
The Sissinghurst wall sconce is inspired by the grandeur and cool restraint of Neo classical design, which Martin has subverted by drawing on the radical spirit of the Bloomsbury Group, famed for their celebration of the decorative and the handmade.
Wrapping these stylistic influences together, Martin’s plaster sculpture showcases the beauty of symmetry, of simple materials and the unique pleasures of the handmade. Individual marks, sculpted texture, the movement and curve of worked fluid plaster, all breathe warmth into the form of his harmonious design.
The simplicity of the curved body of the sconce is underlined by the decorative flourish of the twin vertically arranged scrolls at the base. Joyful, and almost cartoon-like in their flat 2D stylised representation of the powerful scrolls of Greco-Roman architecture, they are a contemporary tribute to symmetry and grandeur.
