Cissbury Pendant
Further images
Lit from above and below, the Cissbury Pendant is a celebration of light, of pure organic curves and of hand sculpted texture. Dramatic uplighting from the hidden light source inside the bowl is complemented by subtle highlighting of the central column as it pierces the bowl. The Cissbury Pendant light adds a unique welcoming style and warmth to an interior.
The pendant embodies a contemporary minimalist ethos which connects to the natural world through Martin's making process. His expressive sculptural style uses textural marks and simplified organic forms to evoke the presence of the living world.
The two part design creates a conversation between the sweep of the curved bowl, and the upright column which pierces and disrupts the shape. Light spills around this inverted junction.
Working in plaster, Martin creates fluent organic forms with a rich hand shaped texture, which is accentuated by the light source. Inspired by the local chalk landscape of the South Downs, the pendant references the ancient hill fort of Cissbury Ring, the largest in Sussex dating back over 5,000 years.
